What else?

Next to my studies, I have developed myself in other ways over the past few years.

Round One Ventures

Board year

Round One Ventures is a student-run venture capital fund investing in high-potential pre-seed student startups in Brabant. I was the deal flow director of the first board, which gave me the responsibility of sourcing and negotiating deals with student startups. I learned to analyse the startups based on their team, product and market, doing due diligence through research and interviews.

Being part of the first board meant the funding was not completely raised yet, and I had to help with the fund raising too. By the end of my board year the fund was at  €1.5 million, and completed our first investment of €80.000, on top of giving away a few €5.000 vouchers.

Lucid Committees

During this committee in my first year I was in charge of finding and communicating with companies and other
organizations to plan visits and coordinate workshops. The planning of this trip happened during the first wave of COVID, so the ever changing regulations asked for a lot of adaptability

Even though the trip ended up getting cancelled due to COVID risk, I was still glad to get my first professional experiences under my belt.

First Years Trip

External

In the two years I was part of FOCUS, we rebuilt the committee and rebranded it. During the first year of COVID, all the old members left and after a year of inactivity everything mostly had to be reinvented.

My official role was treasurer, but with a budget of €200, I spent more of my time on the rebranding. I created a house style and was responsible for our social media presence.

Additionally, we organised workshops and a photography trip to Antwerp.

FOCUS

Treasurer / Marketing

In this committee we organized a 'handyman' tournament where teams had to build the fastest vehicle to go down a big water slide. This was the largest event I worked on in terms of participants - we aimed for 250 - over the last four years.

Because of the Lustrum there were many more events than normal so getting people to come required more effort than I had previously experienced.  I was in charge of the marketing and branding, setting up a social media campaign plan and organising promotional activities.

Scrollmate

I worked at web design startup Scrollmate as a web designer. My main task was building websites in WordPress according to clients’ wishes, including setting up security, SEO, and keeping the websites updated once in use. Due to the small size of the company, working together with only 4 others, I gained insights in the way the company was run. I learned how the pricing was determined, how the administration was done and helped on making expansion plans for the future.

I set up my own company to be able to do paid assignments, mainly regarding photography and graphic design. I learned the basics of running a company, including administration, setting prices and sending invoices. On top of that, it gave me confidence in my abilities as a graphic designer and photographer to value my work properly and act accordingly.

I also started giving chess lessons at primary schools as a self-employed person. This taught me to break down complex concepts and communicate them in a clear manner, enthusing the students. It also gave me confidence to take on a leading role for a larger group of people and be able to adapt quickly to unforeseen circumstances.

Film making

Besides the videos I made for the study - all videos on the project pages were made by me - I wanted to improve my film making skills by making my own videos.

These are a few examples of videos I made in my free time.

About someone going for a walk, noticing a big building but then getting distracted by nature while looking for the entrance to the building.

Documenting the midterm holiday of my exchange in New Zealand.

Depicting an average hung-over afternoon.
